This study showed that in Fibromyalgia patients, there were differences in energy parameters and more “oxidative stress” markers. This is turn appears to increase inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor. Not only did these markers correlate to degree of symptoms in Fibromyalgia patients, but supplementation with Coenzyme Q-10, which aids the energy reactions in mitochondria, normalized these markers and helped symptoms.
Many therapies for Fibromyalgia include supplements that support mitochondria, such as Co-Q10 and antioxidants. This makes sense! However, we still need to get to the bottom of why the energy problem (mitochondrial dysfunction) arises in the first place. Stay tuned ….
